The Kogi are descendants of the Tairona civilization, one of the great pre-Columbian cultures of South America. Unlike the Maya, Inca, and Aztecs, the Kogi preserved their traditions and culture by retreating into the high mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia, maintaining their way of life for over 4,000 years.
The Kogi consider themselves the Elder Brothers, guardians of the Earth who maintain balance between the natural and spiritual worlds. Their knowledge is passed down orally through spiritual practice and careful observation of nature. For the Kogi, architecture transcends physical structures; it is about creating living spaces that align with natural energies, support human thought processes, and maintain harmony with the land.
This workshop offers a rare opportunity to engage directly with Kogi elders and explore how their ancestral knowledge of land, materials, and space can inspire a more sustainable and regenerative approach to architecture.
At STERLING PRESSER Architects + Engineers, we believe in architecture that engages in dialogue with its environment and integrates sacred geometry to create more sustainable and balanced spaces.
