Indoor Theatre
Taiyuan, China
How can a mandala-inspired theatre form establish a genius loci centered on the stage?
Project Overview
The Taiyuan Indoor Theatre is a large-scale classical performance venue aiming to serve as a major cultural center in Shanxi Province. It is designed to integrate 1677 seats and forms the final "leaf" of a current, larger outdoor theatre project on the site. The overall composition is envisioned as a "lotus" mandala, emphasizing continuous flow and a unique, centralized spatial arrangement. The combined Outdoor and Indoor Theatre is designed to unify large audiences, allowing thousands of eyes to participate in and be inspired by the performance, thereby leaving a lasting cultural heritage and landmark along the river.

Design Concept
The architectural concept is deeply symbolic, aiming to create a genius loci a spirit of the place—where the form emerges directly from the earth. The design is a fluid movement that connects. The primary inspiration is the lotus mandala, a centralized composition of multiple "leaves." The stage is the main center of energy and the "center of creation." The building's form is generated entirely around this point. Architecturally, the building is based on a peeling concept, where 7 symbolic leaves create a three-dimensional sculpture that focuses the entire structure toward the stage. The curved entrance bridge signals the lotus geometry upon arrival. The golden center shines toward the sky, forming the “Sky Eye” which invites the public into the art.

Structure and Engineering
While specific engineering details are not provided, the structural solution must facilitate the complex, non-rectilinear, and heavily symbolic form of the design. The structure directly expresses the concept, creating the continuous flow and the unique centralized composition necessary for the 7 symbolic leaves to form a coherent, three-dimensional sculpture.

Urban Integration and Spatial Experience
The theatre’s design acts as a major urban and cultural catalyst, uniting audiences and strengthening the connection to the river. The combined indoor and outdoor theatre complex brings the public together as a powerful cultural anchor and establishes a new destination along the riverfront. A curved entrance bridge plays a key role in urban integration, announcing the architectural geometry and guiding the continuous flow of visitors into the centralized composition. Spatially, the experience is focused on a unified gaze toward the stage, where thousands of eyes converge to participate collectively, while the interior is shaped by seven symbolic leaves that create a distinctive, concentrated atmosphere.
