Design Concept

The architecture is rooted in the landscape and inspired by the city’s iconic “Heart of Viana” jewelry, creating a strong cultural reference within a contemporary structure. A “musical grid” organizes the spans, aligning them with the rhythm of the nearby Eiffel Bridge to create a subtle visual dialogue across the river. The structure features an “internal wave,” where the beams undulate and deepen at the supports, while warm timber lining gives the interior a natural and inviting feel. At intervals, the bridge widens into balconies up to 6 meters wide, offering spaces for rest, sunset views, and informal cultural events.

Structure and Engineering

The supporting structure is a multi-span system of bilateral steel beams engineered for maximum resource efficiency.

• Variable Depth Beams: The steel superstructure utilizes a box-section design that is deepest at the piers where loads are highest, allowing for a slender and elegant profile near the abutments.
• Robust Materials: Structural steel with high-performance fluorocarbon coatings (designed for a 60-year lifespan) ensures durability in the saline maritime environment.
• Integrated Infrastructure: Lighting and drainage are seamlessly embedded into the handrails and deck, maintaining the clean lines of the "Viana Heart" silhouette.

Sustainability (Regeneration/Resilience)

The project is designed to meet several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting green mobility and minimizing material consumption.

• Low-Carbon Materials: The design specifies cement substitutes for concrete and explores the use of "fossil-free" Hybrit steel and Carbon Capture Concrete.
• Circular Economy: A recyclable, vegetable-based asphalt pavement is proposed for the deck. Furthermore, the project aims to reuse crushed concrete from existing demolition for new embankments.
• Eco-Sensitive Lighting: Functional LED lighting integrated into the handrails uses a warm color temperature (2700K-3000K) and dimming capabilities to protect local biodiversity and ecology.

Urban Integration and Spatial Experience

The bridge is conceived as a high-quality “place to stay” rather than a simple transit route, encouraging users to pause and experience the space.

It promotes green mobility through a clear 4-meter width that comfortably accommodates both pedestrians and cyclists, supporting safe and sustainable non-motorized transport.

Wellness and social interaction are enhanced through wooden seating integrated into the balconies, inviting the community to relax, contemplate the Lima River, and enjoy views of the historic city skyline. The eastern abutment is designed as a resilient landscape element, using a reinforced earth structure with local backfill. This reduces the need for extensive concrete works while allowing the bridge to integrate naturally into the riverbank topography.
