Spree Timber Haus
Berlin, Germany
How can a carbon-negative timber high-rise redefine sustainable luxury and set a new standard for biophilic urban living in a historic city center?
Project Overview
The Spree Timber Haus is a pioneering eco-residential tower intended to be a flagship for green architecture in Berlin. This sculptural, 15-story timber high-rise replaces conventional residential structures by seamlessly integrating nature, community, and design innovation. The project is strategically located beside the Spree River, offering residents both immersion in nature and close proximity to Berlin’s vibrant urban culture. The concept features residential units ranging from compact studios to expansive family lofts and serves as a model for the city's post-carbon architectural ambitions.

Design Concept
The architectural vision is inspired by modular treehouse forms, emphasizing a symbiotic relationship with nature and the water. The core concept is the sculptural timber high-rise, which is composed of interlocking timber volumes. The design prioritizes biophilic principles, incorporating generous balconies, green terraces, and vertical gardens to bring nature directly into the urban fabric. This warm, natural aesthetic intentionally contrasts and complements the surrounding steel-and-glass cityscape, creating a unique and desirable residential identity. The flexibility of the modular units allows the project to cater to diverse demographics, from young professionals to large families.

Structure and Engineering
The structural solution is a direct commitment to sustainability, utilizing a mass timber approach engineered for optimal performance and efficiency. The project is primarily built from Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), chosen for its strength, buildability, and ecological benefits.
