Workshop with the Kogi People “Indigenous Perspectives on Architecture”
STERLING PRESSER | architects+engineers in collaboration with Architektenkammer Berlin, Bauhaus Earth and Sacred Future is pleased to invite you to a unique workshop with Kogi elders in Berlin.
We were honored to welcome the Kogi people from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta to Berlin last week, ahead of the "Indigenous Perspectives on Architecture, Building and Living" workshop at the Architektenkammer Berlin.
This workshop offered a unique perspective on sustainability and regenerativity, connecting indigenous knowledge with contemporary architecture to foster deeper alignment with nature and thought processes, while encouraging collaborative dialogue to explore innovative solutions for sustainable design
During the two-day workshop, held at the Architektenkammer Berlin, we explored ways of thinking and building rooted in the Kogi’s vision of balance.
Together, we discussed:
- Building materials and the relationship between the human body and the landscape
- The nuhué (house of knowledge / spiritual sanctuary) construction process
- Sacred sites
- Architecture and thought processes: how the spaces we live in shape our patterns of thought, emotions, and ideas
- Regenerativity in urban planning
…and many more topics that continue to resonate.
We manage as well to spent time with the Kogi outside the formal event and it was a meaningful experience. We walked through Berlin, shared thoughts, and went to places like Sachsenhausen, a former concentration camp, and the nature conservation watchtower in Hohen Neuendorf. That moment of quiet reflection brought deep questions about architecture memory, healing, and the role of land in holding history and memorial.
A huge thank you to our partners: Timeless Wisdom Academy, Bauhaus Earth, and the Architektenkammer Berlin. This exchange of perspectives left us inspired and energized to keep building bridges between ancient knowledge and future practices.
